Dilantin
Dilantin is an anti-convulsant used to treat and prevent seizures, particularly for patients with epilepsy. Dilantin can cause severe consequences including a severe allergic reaction known as Stevens Johnson Syndrome, and it has also been reportedly associated with certain types of cancer. It can also cause delirium, high blood sugar, mood changes, confusion, peeling skin, numbness in the extremities, fever and chills, random eye and muscle movements, and a swelling of the lymph nodes that has been associated with cancer.
Elderly patients are particularly at risk for Dilantin's side effects. People who have stopped taking the drug as well as pregnant women are likely to see an increase in seizures. This makes it exceptionally dangerous because those who are concerned about its effects are cautioned not to stop taking Dilantin suddenly, because doing so can actually cause extended seizures to occur. They should instead consult their doctor to voice concerns before altering their compliance with the prescription.
Dilantin is manufactured by Pfizer and has been on the market since 2001. While the risks mentioned here have been widely reported, nothing has been done to recall the drug.
