Dangerous Drugs - Duragesic
The Duragesic patch is formulated to provide mild to severe pain relief through a transdermal patch resting on the skin. In July of 2005, a public health advisory was issued by the FDA concerning the patches. At least one fatality, as the result of a production defect, has been reported.
The defect causes the opiate ingredient of the Duragesic patch, Fentanyl, to leak through one edge of the patch, causing heightened absorption or unintentional gestation. The resulting severe side effects can be fatal. The broad recall of the patches has helped to restrict the safety risk to patients, however future cases of injury as the result of defective Duragesic patches remain a possibility.
