Dangerous Drugs - Premphase
Premphase, also sold as Prempro, is a hormonal replacement therapy for menopausal women. Since its introduction, it has been linked to a variety of dangerous side effects, including: Alzheimer's disease, dementia, blood clots, stroke, pulmonary embolisms, lupus and breast cancer. More than 6 million women are taking Prempro to treat post-menopausal hot flashes and other menopause symptoms.
The nation's biggest hormone replacement study recently concluded that long-term use of Premphase and Prempro is dangerous and significantly increases the risk of stroke, blood clots, heart attacks and breast cancer. The results were so revealing that the National Institute of Health (NIH) decided to prematurely cancel the study. According to the results, women taking Premphase/Prempro have a 41% higher risk of stroke, 26% higher risk of breast cancer, and a 29% higher risk of heart attack. In 2001, Wyeth, the manufacturer, made $890 million in sales from Premphase and Premarin (a similar drug) alone.
