Dangerous Drugs - Zevalin
Zevalin is a radioimmunotherapy treatment for some forms of B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The drug is administered by injection, and it allows radiation to attach to the cancerous cells, thus killing those and some surrounding cells. In 2002, Zevalin was approved by the FDA for the treatment of cancer, the first radioimmunotherapy drug to be approved as such. The drug nets a yearly profit of roughly $15 million for its manufacturers.
In some cases, severe cutaneous or mucocutaneous reactions, some with fatal outcome, have been reported in association with the use of Zevalin, and Biogen Idec and FDA have notified healthcare professionals of revision to boxed warnings and prescribing indications to reflect those occurences. Patients experiencing a severe cutaneous or mucocutaneous reaction should not receive any further components of the Zevalin therapeutic regimen and should seek prompt medical evaluation.
