Environmental Pollutants - Silicosis

The second most common mineral on earth, silica, can also be one of the most dangerous. Silica dust has been cited as a cause for lung cancer, tuberculosis and other major illness. It is used in the production of glass and silica gel, which is used to keep moisture from harming sensitive materials such as clothes and medication. While these applications of silica are mostly safe, silica dust created during various manufacturing processes can cause serious illness.

Most major symptoms only occur after 10 years of exposure, and modern technology, including respirators, has allowed for general relief to be provided to those who suffer. In developing countries and for those without adequate medical insurance, however, symptoms from exposure can shorten a person's life span by as much as 30 years. The following is a list of symptoms which might occur after exposure to silica dust:

  • Shortness of breath after physical exertion
  • Severe cough and hoarseness of the throat
  • Fatigue
  • Irregular breathing patterns
  • Fever
  • Chest pain
  • Loss of appetite

In advanced cases, the following may also occur:

  • Respiratory insufficiency
  • Cyanosis
  • Cor pulmonale

An increased occurrence of tuberculosis infection is also common.

If you or a loved one has suffered an injury, illness or death, as the result of an environmental pollutant, such as silicosis, and you believe the exposure was someone else's fault, call VanDerGinst Law at 1-866-843-7367 or click here for a FREE online case evaluation. The initial consultation is free of charge. If we agree to handle your silicosis case, we will work on a contingency fee basis, which means we get paid for our services only if, and when, there is a money recovery for you. In many cases a silicosis lawsuit must be filed before an applicable expiration date, known as a statute of limitations. Please call right away to ensure that you do not waive your right to possible compensation.
